A nine-year-old boy and his father had to be rescued by RNLI lifeguards after they were swept out to sea at Scarborough.
The pair, from Glasgow, were spotted outside the safe swim area in the resort on Saturday afternoon.Lifeguards suspected they may have been caught by a strong current and went to their aid.
The father and son were both exhausted and were unable to reach the shore without the help of lifeguards.
The pair were about 90m (265 ft) from shore when they were rescued by lifeguards Tim Machon and Jack Perry.
Mr Machon said: "We understood the boy had got into difficulty in the water and so his dad had gone to try to help him. Unfortunately, they both got caught in a rip current and really were in some difficulty when we reached them."
The boy was transported back to the shore on a paddleboard, whilst his father was towed using a rescue tube.
The nine-year-old was treated by paramedics for hypothermia.
